Sprout Day 142 (Tuesday, August 16th, 2016)

Today was a good day.  We hiked 15 miles and we're staying at the Pierce Pond lean-to.  It was nice to go 15 miles on a relatively flat terrain.  We had a few small inclines but it was nothing compared to what it has been like for awhile now.

We're going to cross the Kennebec River tomorrow which requires us to get a ride from the ferry service.  The river is too wide and too dangerous to ford. I think it's a canoe and someone takes you across during the hours of 9-2. There's a Bed and Breakfast on the other side of the river and we have a mail drop waiting on us there.  The Bed and Breakfast also sells burgers and milkshakes that are supposed to be really good.

I'm glad to finally be out of the difficult section in southern Maine. It was beautiful and great being there but we needed some sort of relief.  Not too sure how far we're going tomorrow but I'd like to go as far as we can each day so maybe we can stay at a nice spot in the hundred mile wilderness to relax and enjoy it.  We're about 40 miles from the hundred mile wilderness now.

The shelter here sleeps eight and it's full.  There are also a handful of tents up too.  The three of us have our own little secluded spot right on the water.  I’m glad we got our own spot, last night some thru hikers from Georgia showed up and basically camped right on top of us.  There were plenty of other spots and no one else was camping where we were so I’m not sure why they felt the need to set up their tent not even five feet from our tent.  I like a little room!

It's supposed to rain this evening.  I guess we'll see how that goes, hopefully it passes over and we stay dry!  Pierce pond and all the other ponds in Maine have been huge.  They look more like a lake to me.

We passed mile 2,000 on the trial today (From Springer Mountain)
