Monday, August 15, 2016 Day 141
Today I hiked 1.2 miles. We stopped early because we went swimming and felt like taking it easy. We’ll make up the miles tomorrow
Tuesday, August 16, 2016 Day 142
Today I hiked 15.1 miles to a lean-to. The hike was nice and flat but it was super rocky and there were a lot of roots. I’m in camp and almost ready for bed. Tomorrow we will pick up our resupply.
Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Day 143
I hike 7.2 miles to a river which requires a canoe ferry to cross. There is a hydropower plant upstream which releases water and makes the currents powerful and too strong to ford on foot. I got to help paddle the canoe across so that I could keep heading north!
Once we were in Caratuck we got our resupply, charged our electronics, and ate cheeseburgers and shakes. After that we hiked a couple more miles because it got late in the day. We set up camp in a stealth spot, ate dinner, and got ready for bed.
Thursday, August 18, 2016 Day 144
Today I hiked 11.4 miles. We went up Pleasant Mountain and got to camp a little early. It was a great hike after Pleasant Mountain because it was nice and flat before we hit the next mountain tomorrow!
Friday, August 19, 2016 Day 145
Today we hiked 15.4 miles to get close to town so we can can get ready for the 100 mile wilderness. We will be in Monson Maine tomorrow! We climbed Moxie Bald Mountain today which is the last mountain before the 100 mile wilderness. The rest of the hike was mostly flat with some hills at the end of the day. Once we got to camp I ate dinner and got ready for bed.
Monday, August 22, 2016 Day 148
The post office was shut so we were stuck in Monson for the weekend. After resupplying for the 100 mile wilderness I hiked 3 miles. When I got into a camp there was a woman there who had fallen and broken her ankles. Paramedics showed up and I helped them carry her out to the nearest road which was about a mile away. When I got back to camp I ate and went to bed. It was definitely a memorable first day in the 100 mile wilderness!
Tuesday, August 23, 2016 Day 149
Today I hiked 12.1 miles. It was up and down all day. I was too tired to walk an extra four miles so I stopped and set up camp and got some shut eye.
Wednesday, August 24, 2016 Day 150
Today I hiked 13.5 miles up the first mountain in the 100 mile wilderness. It was up and down. All day it was very physical. It seems to get more tough the further we get into the 100 mile wilderness. When I got to camp I set up and went to sleep!
Thursday, August 25, 2016 Day 151
Today I hiked 9.2 miles. I went as far as I could but it’s hard to high mileage when it’s mountains for miles! We are almost done with the mountains and it's going to get flat for now on!
Friday, August 26, 2016 Day 152
Today I hiked 11.1 miles over the last mountain range before Katahdin! A moose woke me up this morning out of a dead sleep. I got out of my tent and watched it for 15 minutes. It just stood there and I tried to take a picture but it was too dark. I'm physically and mentally tired and I'm trying my best to push through this journey.
Saturday, August 27, 2016 Day 153
Today I hiked 14 miles to a campsite that had a huge lake. I did the 10 by 10 challenge, which is to hike 10 miles by 10 a.m.! The lake had fresh mussels and was great for swimming too. I got to hangout with other hikers and we had fun.
Sunday, August 28, 2016 Day 154
I hiked 21.5 miles today! It was the longest day of my Appalachian Trail experience! It was very hard but it felt great getting a 20 mile hike day in before Katahdin. I’m very sore and tired and now I’m ready for bed!
Monday, August 29, 2016 Day 155
I hiked 15 miles to get out of the 100 mile wilderness today. I’m ready to hike into Baxter State Park and to summit Katahdin in only two days! I can’t believe I’m here!
Tuesday, August 30, 2016 Day 156
Today I hiked 10 miles into the Katahdin campsite. I met my dad and Mikey. They are taking us south. Now I’m getting ready to complete the northern part of the Appalachian Trail and to summit Katahdin tomorrow.
Wednesday, August 31, 2016 Day 157
Today I hiked 5 miles up Katahdin and completed the north end of the Appalachian Trail! It was very exciting and emotional. The weather was cloudy and there was no view. After summiting Katahdin you have to hike back down off the mountain on the same trail you hiked up. This has been an amazing experience.
I need to stop hiking the Appalachian Trail for now but I’m looking forward to finishing in the spring!
