Today was a great day. After the terrain we hiked yesterday, today was a breeze. We didn't leave until almost noon. I hiked with Karma for a mile or so today (I can't believe I kept up!) and I asked her all sorts of random questions and really enjoyed her company.
We only hiked eight miles today and we passed William Brien Memorial Shelter at around five miles in. It was a really neat shelter and the surrounding area was so cool. I was so enthralled with the setting that I didn't take any photos! I wish I had. I think Sprout did though.
We pushed on after a short break for lunch. Sprout pushed ahead to get to camp and I lollygagged around, taking my sweet time, and enjoying my hike.
I came up on Palisades Parkway. Where a sign was that said New York City was only 34 miles away!! It's crazy that I could be in all these woods with the Big Apple so close to me. I have a love for New York City that will never fade and wish we could visit while on this trip. This is a super busy highway that you have to run across. I stood and watched for at least 10 minutes looking for a break in the cars before I decided that I needed to just sprint as fast as I could across. I didn’t realize there was a tiny little curb on the side of the highway and just as I started to run I almost fell!! It was really scary!
In the median of the highway was a trail register. I sat and read all the people who have crossed through and kept looking for Rabbit, who I thought I might just have kept overlooking! I put our names on the register and kept on truckin’.
I got to a creek and Sprout was just leaving. We high fived and he was off. I sat there filtering water and humming happily to myself when I heard a "click click click.” I knew a hiker was coming up from the sounds of their trekking poles on the ground. It was no other than Rabbit! What are the chances? I was looking for his name in particular to see how far ahead he might be. I was delighted. We chatted for a few minutes and then he was off. He got off trail for a few days for family events. :) I slowly made my way up the trail to the shelter where we sang songs and laughed merrily. Sprout made a wonderful fire and I was very content to be here in our home for the night.
Got to paint a white blaze today with Hank V., a trail maintainer in New York!!
