Careful Bubbles! |
It was only a three mile hike and downhill most of the way. We knew the hostel was right by highway 522 but when we got to 522 we didn't see any signs for Mountain Home. It took us a few minutes, and a quick look at the map, to figure out we just needed to go down the road a little ways!

When I got to the hostel I didn't know what to expect. I've never been to a hostel or Bed and Breakfast. Since I had been out in the woods for the past ten days I was ready for anything. What I soon found out is the people that own the Bed and Breakfast are very friendly people. They thru-hiked the AT in ‘93 and knew what hikers needed when they got off the trail. We were greeted with lemonade and cookies... It was a great sign because anyone who knows me knows that I love cookies!
Scott and Lisa live here and made our stay as comfortable as possible. The cabin is a small cozy place that sleeps 4 upstairs, in an attic style room, has one room downstairs, and one that Scott and Lisa sleep in. If too many hikers show up, and it's nice out, they said they give up their bed and sleep in a tent outside!
Mountain Home Cabbin |
There's a lot of history here. Scott gave us a tour of the property. There's a main house on the lot (separate from the cabin where we stayed.) It's huge but under construction as they are renovating it. Scott walked us through the house and gave us details of each room. It was very interesting. The house is dated back to the 1800s. The road out front, Route 522, was a main road for the Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War. During renovations they found old newspapers and a diary from a girl who lived in the house during that time. Her name was Annie, and while writing about where she lived, she spelled cabin, cabbin. That is why the name of the hostel is Mountain Home Cabbin. From her diary they found out that this house was used for a field hospital for the troops! Annie wrote about soldiers peeking through the windows and how she hid from them because she was scared. Sometimes they would come and take horses, crops, or whatever they wanted. It was pretty cool to see the spot where she kneeled to hide. She also wrote about her dad chasing people out of their garden who were trying to steal vegetables! Scott and Lisa are going to make the main house into the Bed and Breakfast. They are going to have everything ready by 2018 for it to open.
We got a ride to Front Royal from Scott at 12:30. He drove us through town and showed us where we wanted to go (we wanted food, a laundromat, a grocery store and a post office.) After we got out of the car our very first stop was the laundromat. We had to get these clothes clean! Our next stop was for ice cream! We went to C & C Frozen Treats. The guy who owned the ice cream shop was crazy. He was hyper and a real nut case! He had a great personality though. His ice cream (homemade) was some of the best I've ever had. The texture was on point and he had unique flavors. I got Policeman's Paradise (glazed doughnut flavor, haha!) and Fudge Brownie. It was SO GOOD! Next, we went to a deli. I got an Italian sub. We had dessert first but the sub was delicious too!

We didn't plan to do this, but Bubbles and I cut all of our hair off! We cut it really short! It only makes sense to have short hair out here. It's going to be easier to keep clean and tick season is starting.
Bubbles donated her hair, again! |
Bubbles and I compromised... she wanted it shorter but she used the longest clipper attachment! |

ReplyDeleteGreat blog. I removed my earlier comment because I had fat fingered in a spelling error or two. We are section hikers and just finished a hike from Harper's Ferry SOBO to Gravel Springs Hut about MM 17 on Skyline Drive. When we passed Rt 522 we almost stayed at Mountain Home. They had room but Lisa was out ferrying a hiker to the PO. In that amount of time as we waited, we decided to stay at the Scottish Inn so we could just walk around the town at will and walk to and from the motel, (after taking a taxi to town). But I was still interested in the story behind Mountain Home so was just now googling it and came across your blog. Happy Hiking from daveandjaneofnoknownaddress.blogspot.com.
