We got on the trail around 9:00 am after staying at the Cabbin, which is later in the day than we normally start. I like to break camp before the sun is up. It doesn't happen everyday, but we try.
The walk was HARD. Our packs felt like they had bricks in them. Well, one of us was carrying a brick of cheese! Side note: one of the great things about it being cold on the trail is that we can keep foods that require refrigeration! I love me some CHEESE!!
We stopped at the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter to make a pot of jet fuel (coffee). My favorite part of the shelter wasn't the amazing solar shower or the horseshoe pits, but a small piece of paper in the shelter that gave the history about Jim and Molly. I looked online for information about them before we left for the trail but couldn't find anything.

After we left the shelter we had another 5.5 miles to bust out. While hiking we came across train tracks and heard the familiar sound of a train whistle. We waited for the train to pass and it made my day! I’ve never been that close to a train passing by (at least out of a car) and it was going much faster than it would have if it was in a town. Smudgy Cheeks put some quarters on the rails and we danced and jumped around like kids while the train passed. The conductors waved and tooted the horn for us. I felt important!! Haha, I don't know why, but it was so cool.

We made it to Manassas Gap Shelter. We kept joking all day and calling it Man ... Asses. We can be immature but it made us laugh a lot. We had the shelter to ourselves and it was nice to be in camp.
